Heartily though I support Bob Geldof's campaign, are people really sitting through the whole thing? I spent most of the day watching the cricket, and I'm fairly confident that was the correct decision.

Blimey, William Donaldson has died.

ID Bill: Aye 314, No 283. Good work, but not quite good enough for the moment.

[info]kennedybak is in campaigning mood and urges sympathetic parties to join NO2ID if you haven't done so already.

UPDATE: Oh yeah, and sign the pledge too (thanks [info]amuchmoreexotic)

Do the DUP back ID cards?

Attn [info]mooism (and other interested parties): the DUP's Peter Robinson is (UPDATE: was a minute ago) talking about ID cards in the Commons. He seems to be in favour of ID cards in principle, but not so sure about the bill. He thinks it should be compulsory, but free.

Andrew Marr says the vote might be 'interesting', anyway.

Tony Blair: better opinions available in the past

Via here, a splendid old quote extracted from Tony Blair's New Britain: My Vision of a Young Country:

Instead of wasting hundreds of millions of pounds on compulsory ID cards as the Tory right demand, let that money provide thousands more police officers on the beat.

Religious hatred bill/Rowan Atkinson

Has anyone done a "well, I'd certainly like to see Johnny English banned"-type joke yet?

UPDATE: Oh, I see 'Gee' has done one on the NOTBBC comedy forum. Great minds thinking alike, clearly.

Andrew Murray's disturbing mouth

It looks like his head is being stretched from above by a third party, while his jaw resists.

The BBC have appointed Nick Robinson to succeed Andrew Marr as political editor.

This is a break with their recent tradition of appointing print journalists to the post (John Cole, Robin Oakley, Andrew Marr all came from the press). I always thought Robinson was a bit too good for ITV news, though, so well done him.

I bought some books off Amazon the other day, and they're supposed to be delivered today by something called 'Parcelnet'. Their website is unhelpful - what's the latest they're likely to turn up, anyone know?

Guardian changes size

They've been talking about doing this for ages, but it looks like they had to build a new printing press first (in 'Stratford, East London', which will be a consolation if they don't get the Olympics).

I'm not sure if it will solve the problem though, which is that people like having a small paper to read on the train without having to buy the Daily Mail or whatever, which is why the Independent's sales have rocketed up and the Grauniad's have slumped.

Apparently the verdict is going to be broadcast by audio only, and it will only cut in at the exact point where the verdict is delivered.

What if they cut in a little bit too late, between the juror (EDIT: court clerk) saying 'not' and 'guilty'?!!?!! Everyone will be like 'OMFG!!!!'
